Yoga's ultimate goal to alleviate suffering and end the cycle, of birth and loss is the liberation of the individual. Through the practice of Yoga, the individual will learn to control their body and mind and to transcend desire. Then, through meditation, the yogi will experience a blissful union between the supreme Reality and the individual soul. This state of total self-collectedness will be the result of the yogi's understanding of the yogic philosophy.

The history of yoga philosophy has been complex and long. There are two main schools that focus on yoga philosophy, each with a unique focus. The west inspired the creation of the Tantric and Yoga Sutras schools.
